2020-21 Hockey Season Frequently Asked Questions

For the latest information on the 2020-2021 season, please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions below.  We will keep this up to date as we learn more, so please check back often.

Q: How can I be notified of Freeze program updates and registration going live?
A:  Online registration will no go live until we have a tryout date.  In the mean time, please visit the Fall Survey page here: 2020-2021 Survey and fill out the brief survey.  This will allow us to keep you up to date with future email communications about tryouts.

Q: When will tryouts for the CBHL 2020-2021 season be held?
A: PVAHA (our USA Hockey affiliate) sets the schedule for tryouts. Tryouts have been postponed indefinitely, and no new date has been set yet.

Q: What is the process for determining when tryouts will be held?
A: Currently, the ice rinks in Maryland and Virginia remain closed. Once the restrictions on ice rinks are lifted, a date for tryouts will be set. Since the CBHL spans multiple states, tryouts will not be scheduled until all CBHLice rinks in both states are open. Once the rinks are open, it will take approximately 10 days to recreate the ice surfaces. Tier 1 tryouts will likely take place at least 10 days after the rink open date with Tier 2 tryouts taking place one or two weeks after that. All CBHL teams are Tier 2.

Q: When will online registration for the Freeze 2020-2021 season go live?
A: Once we have a confirmed date for tryouts, we will begin the process of building the online registration. We will have some internal tasks to complete first. If the season is condensed, we will have to update our budget and adjust the season fees. Once all of the internal tasks are complete, registration will go live.

Q: What if tryouts are rescheduled during my family vacation or some other conflict?
A: We will offer supplemental tryouts for anyone who cannot attend. Please reach out to Tommy Demers, Freeze Hockey Director to schedule any supplemental tryouts.

Q: Is the 2020-2021 Fall CBHL season expected to start in September?
A: With no current timeframe for tryouts, it is hard to predict when the season will start. Once the rinks are permitted to open, the PVAHA and the CBHL will work quickly to set a timeline. In a typical season, the CBHL has approximately 4 months between tryouts and the start of games. All CBHL clubs will work together to start the season as soon as it’s allowed and safe to do so.

Q: How many games should I expect during the 2020-2021 season?
A: At this point, everyone is hoping for a full season. However, if we have a delayed start, the season could be condensed. USA Hockey, PVAHA and the CBHL are all following the situation closely and will come up with a plan as soon as possible.

Q: My son and daughter haven’t been on the ice in months. Is there any way to have a few skates before tryouts?
A: It is our intention to offer some sort of pre-tryout clinic before tryouts. This will all be based on availability of ice and any league restrictions. As soon as tryout dates are confirmed, we will work to secure ice slots for the pre-tryout clinic.

Q: How often are you communicating with the CBHL, PVAHA, USA Hockey officials?
A: The Freeze is participating in monthly meetings with the CBHL.   PVAHA has implemented a new bi-weekly meeting that includes club Presidents for updates regarding the COVID-19 crisis and the impact on the upcoming season. We are in regular contact with officials from both the CBHL and PVAHA.  We will work to keep everyone updated based on the outcome of these regular meetings.
