Freeze Weekly Update 01/16-01/17

Midget

18U UA

The Freeze U-18's returned to Reston on Sunday to make up last week's cancelled game. The team was looking to regain their earlier championship caliber form, and also hoping that Reston had a functioning Zamboni. Yes on both accounts, and the boys enjoyed a fine Sunday. The Freeze jumped on Reston early and often, jumping out to a 4-0 lead and sending their goalie to an early shower. The Freeze put on a clinic, scoring on wrap arounds, backdoors, a Blast (see also: Howitzer, Seed, Cannon, Rocket, BB) from the point, and a filthy backhand from in tight. Final score was 5-2. The Freeze continues to lead the U-18 Patrick Division with a record of 9-0-3.

16U LA

The 16U team cancelled their tournament to Charlotte this weekend but was able to schedule a non-league game against the St. James 16U LA team. The Saint James team traveled to Frederick for a Sunday evening game. The Freeze came out strong and took the game easily with a 6-1 win. Andrew Hirsch had a hattie.

The UA U14 team competed in the Congressional Cup Mid-Winter Classic. Saturday we played Tomorrow's Ice at Ion. This was a close game with back and forth scoring. The game was tied up until 3 seconds left in the game. Tomorrow's Ice came out on top, 5 to 4. We then refueled and faced off against the Reston Raiders in Ashburn. The W went to the Freeze with a 6 to 3 victory. Max Epstein with a hat trick. Sunday we traveled to Haymarket and fell to the Ashburn Xtreme. Our Consolation Game was on Monday against the Caps Academy at Haymarket. We are glad to be playing hockey.

14U B

Have you ever seen soccer on ice? Well, the 14U B team did on Sunday when a defenseman had to think quickly when his stick was knocked out of his hands, using his skates to get the puck out of our zone! When he lost his stick a second time, a thoughtful teammate shared his, allowing the team to move up the ice and score beating the Easton Ice Hawks 7-2. We also had a great game Saturday against the Junior Black Bears that ended in a tie. Between the two games we collected an epic 108 shots on goal!

Pee Wee

12U LA

Saturday the PW team hosted the Junior Black Bears in a non-league game. The Black Bears came out ready to win and play hockey since the team hasn't been able to play games at their home rink. Although we had scoring chances, the boys just couldn't put the puck to the net and the Freeze was ultimately defeated in a 7-3 loss.

Sunday, we headed to The St. James for a league match-up with the Montgomery Blue Devils. It wasn't until early in the second period when the Freeze decided to get on the board. The Freeze did not allow Montgomery any shots on goal for the whole second period. The final score was 4-0, with special recognition going to Mason Macera for earning a playmaker and Carl Borge for securing a shutout for the team!

Squirt

10U AA

This past weekend the AA team traveled to Ice World to take on the Montgomery Blue Devils Gold team. It was an intensive game from the puck drop, with great goaltending, defense and offense. The Freeze could not gain control of the game and fell to the Blue Devils, 4-2, in this dual CBHL/EJEPL game.

On Sunday, the Freeze took on STJ UA in a non-league match-up on home ice. The Freeze held STJ to a scoreless first period, and tied it up 1-1 at the end of the second. The Freeze continued to hold the lead in the third period, and held STJ scoreless until 48 seconds left in the game. The final score was 3-2, with the Freeze skating away with the win.

10U LA

The Freeze played in the Congressional Cup Mid-Winter Classic this weekend and emerged as CHAMPIONS!

The team started their tournament Saturday morning with their first game against St. James at ION Arena. The Freeze were able to score first to take the lead. In the second period there was lots of back and forth action and some close chances for both teams, but the score remained the same. In the third period, the Freeze defense really clamped down, blocking shots and clearing the zone to limit St. James shot opportunities, and Dom Studlo was able to get his first shutout of the season with several highlight saves, and the Freeze won 1-0.

For their second game, the Freeze played against the Ashburn Selects. The Freeze got down by a couple of goals early in the first but were able to get one near the end to cut the score to 2-1. The Freeze then played a tight second period and scored again to tie the game with a few minutes left in the second. But Ashburn came back with two goals to end the second and were up 4-2 going into the third. The team looked a little tired in the third period and Ashburn was able to score a few goals to build their lead before the Freeze was able to score the final goal of the game, losing 8-3.

On Sunday morning, the Freeze played their 3rd game against the Loudoun Knights. The winner of this game would go on to the championship game on Monday. The Freeze traded chances with the Knights in a tight first period, before finally breaking the ice with a goal with less than one minute to go in the period. In the 2nd period, Loudoun made a strong push and had many shots on net, and were able to tie up the game. However, the Freeze kept digging and were able to get a second goal with less than a minute in the 2nd period to go up 2-1. In the third, the Freeze picked right up where they left off with a quick strike to get another goal and take a two goal lead. The Freeze limited the Knights chances and kept shots to the outside to hold on for the 3-1 win, which put them in the Championship game on Monday morning.

On Monday morning, the Freeze played against the Ashburn Selects for the championship on Ashburn's home ice. The Freeze struck first and held Ashburn scoreless to take a 1-0 lead into the second period. The Freeze put the pressure on and were able to get another goal for a 2-0 lead. Ashburn was able to score on the power play to chip into the lead, but the Freeze scored again to take a 3-1 lead into the third period. A string of highly questionable penalties against the Freeze in the 3rd period gave Ashburn several power play opportunities and the team was shorthanded for much of the period. Ultimately, Ashburn was able to score two goals to tie the game at 3-3 and send the game to overtime. 5 tense minutes of 4-on-4 overtime hockey saw a lot of chances but still no goals, so we headed to a shootout, best of 5. The Freeze shot first but missed, while Ashburn scored on their first attempt. The Freeze tied it up on their fourth chance, and after 5 skaters had gone on both sides, the shootout score was tied 1-1, so it went to a sudden death shootout. It was an epic goaltender's duel, and both teams went through their rosters, until in the 14th round, the Freeze scored again. Ashburn had one more chance but they were stonewalled once again, and the FREEZE WERE CHAMPIONS!

It was a great team effort and the Freeze showed a lot of heart and grit to push through all the way to the end to come out on top.

Mite

8U UA

The Mite UA team hosted Bowie at Skate Frederick on Sunday. Looking to avenge prior losses to the Freeze, the Bruins came out swinging and struck first to take a 1-0 lead. But Frederick answered right back and controlled the momentum for the remainder of the game. Nicholas Chung and Landen Dehn led the scoring with hat tricks. When the buzzer sounded, it was Frederick with the 15-7 victory. A big shout out goes to Brendan Waters, who stepped in to play goalie and made numerous saves, denying the Bruins on several of their offensive attacks!

The team will see a lot of hockey next weekend! The Freeze travels on Saturday to Ashburn for a game against the Xtreme UA1 team and then on to the Prince William Ice Center for a jamboree against Potomac, St. James Navy and Caps Academy. On Sunday, the Freeze will be at home as they host Caps Academy.

8U B

Our Mite B team had a doubleheader this weekend. They were supposed to play in the second CBHL jamboree on Saturday in Bowie, but due to their Covid restrictions could only play 2 teams at a time, so we ended up playing a full game against Ashburn. Ashburn got a quick start with a pair of early goals, to which the Freeze were able to respond to and almost came back but ultimately fell short 5-4.

Sunday the Mites hosted Bowie and it was all Freeze from start to finish. Seamus Ball made some great saves and shut out the Bruins, and 7 skaters scored goals with hat tricks by Peyton Greenup and Kirby Roebuck to finish the game 14-0.
