Freeze Weekly Update 02/13-02/15

Midget

16U LA

The 16U team is riding the wave in first place...

On Sunday, the team decided to channel some tropical heat while playing a make up game against the Harford North Stars. The first two periods were close, with the Freeze leading 2-1. In the 3rd period, the Freeze took control scoring five goals. The final score was 7-2. Special recognition goes to #88, Andrew Hirsch, for getting a hat trick and #14, Brandon Brower, for securing a playmaker. Next weekend, they finish the regular season with a game against a strong Ashburn team and two against Hagerstown...then off to playoffs!

Bantam

14U UA

This weekend the team headed back to Ice Line in West Chester, PA for the Philadelphia Presidential Power Play tourney where the team earned their title, the Comeback Boys! Our first opponent was Team Philadelphia, where we tied 5 to 5.

During the second game the team did the unthinkable. We were down 5 to 0 against the Rochester Coalition and the Comeback Boys never gave up. We ended up wining the game 7 to 6. ROCO was shocked, and we would end up playing them again in the finals.

The only game we lost was to Valley Forge, 4 to 2.

During the semifinals on Monday, we took on Valley Forge once again, but this time we came out on top 4 to 1.

Our championship game against the Rochester Coalition was a close game, ending in a tie 2 to 2, which was headed into Sudden Death overtime. One of our players took a wrist shot from the top of the circle and scored the tie-breaking goal! The gloves went flying, and the UA 14U team brought home the banner with a 3 to 2 victory!

14U LA

The boys of Bantam LA made the long trip down to Ice World for a league game on Sunday. The boys racked up the shots on net. Passing and offensive zone time gave Frederick the victory over Montgomery, 9-4. Special shout out to #75, Brad Cupples, on his hat trick. Way to go boys!

14UB

Driving in an ice storm for an away game is definitely not ideal, but it didn’t put a damper on our game! With only 10 players the 14U B team ended with a hat trick by #9, Raymie Caiola, and a shutout game 8-0 against the Junior Black Bears this Saturday! We are so proud of our team who took a bad situation, focused, gave more than their all, and played one of the best games this season.

Pee Wee

This weekend, the team played in the local Congressional Cup Tournament.  Games were played at Ion, Ashburn and Reston. Saturday, the team started at Ion and faced the Jr. Black Bears. The team came out strong and won with #29, Eric Metzler, securing a shut out!

Saturday evening was not the outcome we had hoped for. The evening game seemed doomed from the beginning.... the warm up pucks were left in a car, that due to COVID restrictions, left the parking lot. The boys tried and were ultimately defeated by the Montgomery Blue Devils, 8-2.

Sunday's game was a nail biter against the Reston Raiders. The Freeze couldn't seem to make anything hit the back of the net. Finally, after pulling the goalie with only minutes remaining, the Freeze scored to tie up the game. Unfortunately, the tie did not allow the Freeze to advance to the semi-finals.

Monday morning, the Freeze traveled to Reston again for a rematch against the Raiders in the consolation game. The team must've rested well because they came out strong, leading 3-0 at the end of the first. With a couple more goals hitting the back of the net, the final score was 5-0 with #70, Carl Borge, getting the shut out.

Squirt

10U AA

Over the weekend, the AA team competed in the Presidents Day Congressional Cup Tournament. The team's first game would bring an early morning game with a lot of ice and some great back and forth competition against STJ. The Freeze came out of the gate strong, scoring first. The first period ended in a 1-1 tie. The Freeze continued their momentum into the second period, netting two more goals to STJ's one. The Freeze held on to their one point lead and defeated STJ, 3-2.

Sunday brought an ever earlier morning game against a strong Bowie Bruins. The Freeze was able to net the first two goals and hold the Bruins scoreless until the end of the second period. Unfortunately, the Freeze was unable to maintain control of the third period and fell the to Bruins, 5-2. There was just enough time between games on Sunday for the Freeze to rest up before taking on the Harford North Stars. The team knew they had to bring their "A" game to make it to the semi-finals. The first period ended in a 0-0 deadlock, with a lot of back and forth play and neither team seemed to be taking control. The Freeze came out swinging in the second period, netting seven goals and holding the North Stars scoreless. The momentum continued into the third period where the Freeze found the back of the net two more times, ending the with a 9-0 victory over the North Stars. Special recognition goes to #87, Reagan Riley, for leading the scoring with a hat trick and goaltender #22, Davis Blaszak, for a shutout. With this win, the Freeze secured the second seed and would again face STJ Monday morning.

The team showed up Monday ready to play! Even though STJ was the fist to score, the Freeze did not let that get them down and netted two goals to STJ's one in the first. The Freeze continued to push to secure their spot in the championship game, and held STJ scoreless the rest of the game. Final score was 5-1, Freeze. The championship game would bring a rematch against the Bowie Bruins. Eager to avenge their loss earlier in the weekend, the Freeze knew they would have to come out strong and take control of the game. It was a very competitive game with a lot of back and forth puck action. The Bruins struck first, netting their first goal with only one minute left in the first period. The Freeze continued to battle to net their first goal and had multiple close calls. Unfortunately, the Freeze was unable to connect, and fell to the Bruins, 1-0.

Congratulations to the AA team for taking home the second place banner and for all of the hard work you all put in over the weekend. Way to go team!

10U LA

The Freeze hosted the Delaware Rough Riders on Sunday morning. There was a lot of back and forth action in the first period. Delaware scored first, but the Freeze answered back with three goals, and the score was 3-2 going into the second period. Delaware scored a goal quickly into the second period and tied the game at 3-3. The Freeze then began to really crash the net and put pressure on in the offensive zone, jumping on rebounds and centering passes in front of the net to score the next five goals. #44, Julian Di Iorio, and #8, Nathaniel Nadelberg, both earned hat tricks, and #94, Kellan McGuire, secured a playmaker. The Freeze defense and goaltenders did a good job of keeping shots to the outside, clearing rebounds and were able to shut out the Rough Riders for the rest of the game. It was a great team effort that resulted in a 8-3 win.

Next weekend the team will return to league play and hope to secure a playoff spot with their remaining games.

Mite

8U UA

The Mite UA team traveled to Hagerstown for a mini-jamboree on Sunday. They faced Baltimore for the first time this season and continued their scoring domination, beating the Stars 12-1.  #43, Bradley Lapato, and #87, Sebastian Northup, led the scoring with hat tricks. Next up was Hagerstown, they came out tough and clearly looking for revenge from earlier season losses to the Freeze. Hagerstown was no match for Frederick, as they were handed a 6-1 loss. The 3rd game, unfortunately, was unbale to be played, as the Jr. Black Bears could not make the trip to Hagerstown due to the icy conditions Sunday morning, so the Freeze got in a little extra practice!

The team is on the road this weekend to face the Loudoun Knights on Saturday and the Reston Raiders on Sunday. They will then finish their season at the Capital Showdown Tournament, March 5-7.

8U B

The Mite B team hosted a mini jamboree on Saturday with Southern Maryland, Howard and Reston. They started the day off with the toughest match and played tough, but could not make it onto the scoreboard against SoMD, dropping the first match 7-0.

The kids stuck together and kept fighting against Howard, picking up their first win of the day, 5-0, with a shutout for #99, Seamus Ball, and a hat trick for #81, Kirby Roebuck. The third game was against Reston and the Freeze kept the momentum going with another hat trick by #81, Kirby Roebuck. The Freeze were holding a 4-0 lead going into the final minutes, when Reston snuck one in to finish 4-1.

Sunday, the Mites traveled to Hagerstown for another mini jamboree, but could only play two games against the familiar Howard and Hagerstown teams. The  Freeze dominated Howard in the first game, then face a riled up Bulldog team looking for their first win against the Freeze. Goals were traded and the lead changed four times. The Freeze held a 7-6 lead going into the final minutes, and Hagerstown was able to sneak one in for a 7-7 tie.
