Overview

The Frederick Freeze / Frederick Youth Hockey Association (“Freeze”) is a USA Hockey Tier-II youth travel hockey club based out of Frederick, Maryland. The Freeze, a not-for-profit 501-c (3) volunteer-based organization, is seeking a salaried year-round Hockey Director. The position will be filled immediately.

The Hockey Director will oversee all hockey related programming including player and coach recruitment, team assembly, skill development, and more. A complete job description and list of responsibilities is available to qualified candidates.

General Duties and Responsibilities

1. Oversee all aspects of the travel hockey club including (but not limited to) player recruiting and selection, hiring and managing coaches, annual regular season tryouts, parent communication, and spring hockey tournament teams and tryouts.

2. Hire and train all coaches; develop unilateral coaching strategy and program culture.

3. Collaborate with the Freeze Board of Directors to set hockey programming ice schedules.

4. Develop and schedule internal hockey programming such as clinics, tournaments and camps.

5. Serve as designated club representative for any league correspondence and meetings.

6. Support the Freeze at community events and during fundraising opportunities.

7. Strengthen the Freeze and its affiliate hockey programs, including local in-house hockey programs and learn-to-play hockey initiatives.

8. Promote Freeze players to Tier-I and Junior hockey clubs.

9. Other duties to be assigned and created.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate shall possess the following qualifications and characteristics:

1. Bachelor’s Degree and at least one (1) year of experience in ice hockey-related youth sports and hockey activities; or, equivalent education and experience.

2. Successful management experience. Efficient planner with follow-through etiquette.

3. Experience in working within a professional sports team environment. Demonstrated commitment to sport.

4. USA Hockey coaching certification.

5. Strong communication skills and ability to work with a team is a must.

6. Must successfully pass a criminal background check, complete SafeSport training, and other background screenings required by USA Hockey.

7. Played and/or coached at a high-level of youth/minor hockey, junior hockey, NCAA or ACHA hockey, or higher.

The position will be based out of Frederick, Maryland, and the ideal candidate shall reside in Frederick, Maryland, or the Washington, D.C. / mid-Atlantic area with access to Skate Frederick (Freeze home rink).

The Hockey Director shall work as an independent contractor, and the contractor shall report to the Freeze Board of Directors. The initial term of the independent contractor agreement shall be twelve (12) months.

Salary is commensurate with experience and will be competitive in the area.

Other Information

In the 2022-2023 season, the Freeze have nearly 200 registered players competing on thirteen (13) teams at the USA Hockey Tier-II levels from mites through midgets and girls. Since 2018, the Freeze have seen a 20% increase in player registration.

The Freeze participate in the Chesapeake Bay Hockey League (CBHL) and Atlantic Hockey Federation (AHF). The Freeze practice and play home games at Skate Frederick, 1288 Riverbend Way, Frederick, Maryland 21701.
