Weekly Update 11-16-19/11-17-19

U16 UA

The U16 team traveled south to Hampton Roads to play the undefeated Whalers. Despite being down 6 players, due to injury and illness, the Freeze delivered the Whalers their first loss of the season with a 5-1 win.

Sunday morning was not as productive for the Freeze. The team lost 7-2. These 2 teams will meet up again in December for a home match up.

BANTAM LA

This past weekend, the Bantam LA team traveled to the Garden State to face-off against the New Jersey Rockets. On Saturday night, the Freeze played the NJ Rockets Gray team. Before the action began, the boys took some time for fun and team building by having a pizza party and playing laser tag at the Bridgewater Sports Arena. After the festivities, the Freeze hit the ice. Despite out shooting the home team, the visitors fell 3-1.

On Sunday morning, the Freeze dropped the puck against the NJ Rockets Black team. The Rockets led 2-0 deep into the third period. With a power play in hand, the Freeze pulled the goalie to play six on four, and it worked perfectly. The visitors scored with 1:09 remaining to make it 2-1, then added another even-strength goal with 16 seconds to play to stun the home team, and leave the arena with a 2-2 game.

Overall, two highly competitive games and a successful road trip. The Freeze return to CBHL action next weekend with two away games against Bowie & NOVA.

BANTAM B

Another week of hockey has come and gone. Bantam B hit the road over the weekend. First stop, the Freeze faced off against Chevy Chase, Winter Classic style on Saturday morning for a league game. The bright, shining sun and ice conditions, proved to create some unfavorable challenges for the Freeze. Near the end of the third period, Freeze was down 2-1. Goalie Wyant skated off to the bench to bring another skater out, in hopes of securing the tie. With seconds remaining, there were multiple shots to the opposing net. The boys on the ice thought for sure they had tied up the game, but the refs’ final call was no goal. The Freeze lost 2-1.

Sunday, the Freeze headed over to the St. James for a non-league contest. They found themselves in a similar position, once again. Near the end of the third period, the Freeze pulled their goalie for the second time this weekend. The opposing goalie caught a piece of the final shot, to secure the win for the St. James, 2-1. Bantam B is looking forward to a fresh start that a new week brings and will host two home games this upcoming weekend.

PEE WEE LA

This week the team traveled to Pittsburgh to participate in the Veterans Cup Tournament. We started early on Friday morning with two games Friday and then two games on Saturday. The 12U A Division had four teams, with the other three teams traveling down from Canada. Although the results on the ice did not go our way, the team continued to go out and play hard for each game. We had a team dinner Friday night and a few enjoyed going to the Penguins game on Saturday night.

PEE WEE B

The Freeze Pee Wee B boys battled through injury and illness this weekend against the conference-leading Montgomery 12UB Blue team followed by a early road game against the Reston 12U Selects. Montgomery handed the Freeze their first loss of the weekend at 7-2. On Sunday, the Freeze could not overcome the stingy goaltending of the Reston goalie, who faced over 20 shots allowing only one in the final couple minutes of the contest. The score was 6-1.

SQUIRT UA

This weekend saw the Upper A Squirts get a big win and a tough tie. Saturday afternoon brought the Montgomery Blue Devils to Skate Frederick for the third meeting between the two clubs. The Freeze didn’t disappoint. Goalie Alex Birzak and the Frederick defense pitched a shutout, as the offense had six different players score in a 7-0 victory.

Early Sunday morning brought with it the Metro Maple Leafs. From the opening puck drop, it was readily apparent this was going to be a hard fought physical game. Frederick seemed to be firmly in control, 6-2 going into the third period.  Metro mounted a comeback, tying the game 6-6.

SQUIRT LA

On Saturday, the LA team faced Piedmont in a league game. The first period started out with both teams battling for the puck and tough defense. The period ended with Piedmont up, 2-1. The second period proved to be as competitive as the first, with multiple breakaways and great goal tending. The Freeze and Piedmont netted one more goal each, ending the second period 3-2. The third period began with Piedmont dominating the ice. The Freeze was never able to gain control in the final period, ending the game with a 6-2 loss.

On Sunday, the Freeze came out strong, proving they were here to play! The first period began with the Freeze dominating the ice and holding Metro to a scoreless first period, and the Freeze up 1-0. Their momentum never slowed and the second period ended 7-1. The Freeze was an unstoppable machine in the third period, netting three more goals and again holding Metro to a scoreless third period. The Freeze skated away with a 10-1 victory! Special recognition goes to Alex Del Gandio for securing a hat trick.

SQUIRT B

Squirt B split the weekend versus two CBHL rivals. On Saturday morning, the Squirts made their way down to Mt. Pleasant for a game against Baltimore. Scoring only a few minutes into the game, the B’s never looked back. Paddy Ball led the way with a hat trick and multiple skaters had multiple goals during the 9-1 victory. The Defense was the star of the game, putting up a wall that allowed Baltimore very little zone time.

Playing an early game for the second day in a row, the Squirts didn’t come out as strong against the Metro Maple Leafs. The game went back and forth for the first two periods, but tired legs couldn’t keep up with Metro’s deep bench. Metro handed the B’s a 4-2 loss.

MITE LA

The Mite LA team traveled to Mount Vernon for a CBHL jamboree hosted by the NoVA Ice Dogs. First up was the always tough Bowie Bruins, who were looking to avenge several losses to the Freeze earlier in the season.  Frederick was having none of it, and after a 24 minute battle, the Freeze held strong for the 2-0 victory! Next up was Reston 1 and the game was dominated by the Freeze, with Nicholas Chung, Mason Lampe and Jay Vivian scoring hat tricks on the way to an 11-0 win. Game 3 against NoVA proved to be the toughest match of the day, with the teams trading goals back and forth, but it was Frederick who was victorious when the buzzer sounded, by a score of 5-4. The final match up was against NAVY 2, and the Freeze continue their dominance, with six different team members netting goals! Everyone was on their game, which resulted in an 11-0 victory for the Freeze. Special recognition goes to Goalie Connor Szczesniewski, who pulled out all the stops (literally!) to earn 3 shutouts in his 4 wins!

MITE B1

The B1 Mites’ weekend got off to a great start on Saturday morning at the beautiful St James facility in Springfield, VA. Despite the early hour, our team came onto the ice ready to play and skated to a convincing 15-3 victory.

On Sunday, we hosted the CBHL Mite B jamboree at Skate Frederick. The first two match ups were close, but our Mites conceded defeat to Hagerstown and Ashburn. However, they kept fighting and came back to win against Northern Virginia and Reston with scores of 1-0 and 5-2. They showed great offensive and defensive play all around, and continue to improve their skills and teamwork each week!

MITE B2

This weekend Mite B2 traveled to Bowie for a mini jamboree! They took on Howard and Potomac first, and came out with two very close and hard fought losses. The team came together and ended the day with two shut outs, beating Bowie and Southern Maryland!

Congratulations to all the teams that had games & tournaments over the weekend! Keep up the great work and good luck in this weeks games!
